Recycle Your Bikes at Saturday’s Kane County Recycling Extravaganza!

That’s the short and simple version of a reminder from Kane County Recycling Coordinator Jennifer Jarland that bicycle recycling is a wonderful way to participate in the county’s annual recycling extravaganza, set for 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 14, at the Kane County Branch Court, 540 S. Randall Road, St. Charles.
Working Bikes, which collects bicycles at the extravaganza, tackles two issues — local waste of resources and global lack of them — at once. The not-for-profit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) humanitarian aid organization donates used bicycles to individuals and partner organizations in Chicago, Africa, the Caribbean, and Central America.

“In the communities to which we give donations, a bicycle provides mobility and can be the difference between work and unemployment,” Jarland said. “Since its founding in 1999, Working Bikes has redistributed more than 60,000 bicycles, giving these old bicycles new lives.”
Locally, Working Bikes partners with veterans, homeless transition, refugee resettlement, and youth empowerment programs to give out thousands of refurbished bicycles to people in need in the Chicago area.
Bicycles are life-changing tools enabling people in underserved communities to gain access to education, jobs, and healthcare that might otherwise be inaccessible.
“Let’s pitch in and put those underused or outgrown bikes sitting in your garage or basement to good use,” Jarland said. “You can donate bikes of any size, bike parts and accessories. All donations are tax deductible.”
Without the support of thoughtful individuals like you, the work that we do would not be possible, organizers said.

Recycle Paint!
As a reminder, Kane County will take both oil and latex paint, but there is a cost.
As a reminder, TVs, monitors, and paint have a fee. All else is free to drop off. Note that oil-based paints and stains can be taken to the Naperville HHW facility for free drop off.
Costs for paint recycling are lower than in the past because Kane County is working with a new recycler: EPaint Recycling Solutions.
Latex Paint Recycling Cost
- 1 Quart – $1 each
- 1 Gallon – $3 each
- 2 Gallon – $5 each
- 5 Gallon – $10 each
Oil Paint Recycling Cost
- 1 Gallon – $4 each
- 2 Gallon – $8 each
- 5 Gallon – $20 each
This program is also run through area hardware stores, so if you can’t make it to the event, or want to avoid the line, you can take your paint to one of the locations on this list for the same costs.

What You Can Recycle
- Batteries: Alkaline batteries – AA, AAA, C, D, 9V & button batteries; Vehicle – car, truck, motorcycle, power sport
- Bikes, bike parts, helmets, bike baskets: (in good condition please, no rusty parts)
- Books: (any age or condition, hard cover or paperback)
- Clothes, linens, curtains, paired shoes, hats, ties, belts, purses, backpacks, stuffed animals, plush toys: Clean, dry and free of odors. We will accept items that are stained or torn. Remove all hangers. Seal in plastic bags.
- Confidential Document Shredding: for residential use (no businesses please).
- This service provides on-site shredding trucks, where you can watch your documents being shredded if you wish.
- Quantity limit is four boxes (12-inch width by 16-inch depth by 10-inch height) or bags of equivalent size.
- Staples, paperclips, spiral bindings, file folders without metal, and cellophane envelope windows are fine.
- Please REMOVE all binder clips, three-ring plastic binders and any larger metal pieces.
- Please do not bring periodicals, magazines, or other paper that does not contain confidential information.
- Please note that we will receive documents for shredding only until the trucks are full.
- Electronics and holiday light-strings: computers, TVs, DVD players, fax machines, printers, copiers, keyboards, mice, cables, receivers, servers, tablets, phones, electronic games. A full list can be found here.
- TVs and Monitors have a fee: $25 for screens under 21 inches measured diagonally across the screen or $35 for 21 inches and over. Pay with cash or card at event. All other electronic equipment is free to drop off.
- Fluorescent Lamps: (4 -oot tubes) from residential sources only; please no CFLs (most hardware stores take them)
- Paint: Latex paint is non-toxic but difficult to dispose of because you have to dry it out before placing it in your landfill trash. However, it can be easily recycled into new products with no drying out necessary! We will also take oil based paint for a fee, but please note that it is free to drop it off at the Naperville HHW facility (see county website for more info). EPaint will be collecting paint for recycling for a tax deductible per-can fee.
- Paint has a recycling fee per container, payable by the resident with cash or check (Latex is $3/gal).
- Styrofoam blocks and food service foam: Please bring clean sorted materials. Keep in a contained bag. (No packing peanuts or bubble wrap).
What Kane County Will NOT Be Recycling
- No Carpet or Carpet Padding.
- No Household Hazardous Waste.
- No Tires or Motor Oil.
- No bubble wrap or packing peanuts (take to UPS or FedEx stores).
- No mobility devices (try Goodwill).
- No sewing machines.
- No garden tools this year.
- No large household appliances/ “white goods” or Freon-containing appliances.
- No business materials; residential only.
