Sheriff’s Office: Race Car Driver Dies in Sycamore Speedway Crash
A Morton Grove race car driver died following a Friday-night crash at the Sycamore Speedway, 50W112 Old State Road in unincorporated Virgil Township.
According to the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched at 11:20 p.m. Friday (July 13, 2018) to assist the Maple Park Fire Department with a report of a person trapped in a vehicle.
The driver, Timothy G. Erjavac 47, of Morton Grove, was extricated from his vehicle and transported to Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb, where he was later pronounced deceased.
“It does not appear any other persons were injured in this incident,” Kane County Public Information Officer Pat Gengler said. “Due to this event occurring on private property during an organized event, deputies do not anticipate issuing any citations.”
The Sycamore Speedway Facebook page initially said Erjavac was safely removed from his race car after a two-vehicle crash during the Figure 8 event of the Friday-night program.
“Due to the incident and the rain storm that was upon the Maple Park area, Sycamore Speedway management canceled the two remaining events of the night,” the Facebook post said.
At around 1:02 p.m. Saturday, speedway officials announced on Facebook that Erjavac had died.
“The Sycamore Speedway Race Family sends their condolences and ask that everyone keeps Mr. Erjavac’s family in their thoughts and prayers at this time,” the Facebook post said.
