Aurora, Aldermen Host Back-to-School Events
Aurora aldermen are sending students back to school excited and ready to learn by hosting annual events that offer free school supplies, community resources, food and fun for the entire family.
The city of Aurora is supporting the aldermen by providing additional grade-level school supplies to help make sure all students are prepared to succeed.
Here’s a look at some of the upcoming events:
Aurora’s Back to School Fair — Aug. 11
The city of Aurora and its partners are offering a free backpack and school supplies to eligible students who live in Aurora.
Families must supply proof of income and proof of residence.
The event takes place from 9 a.m.to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at John R. Harkness Center, 60. S. Fourth St.

Alderman Jenkins’ Back-to-School Fair — Aug. 10
On Friday, Aug. 10, Alderman-at-Large Sherman Jenkins and AAMOU will host the 10th Annual Back-to-School Fair in partnership with 4th Ward Alderman Bill Donnell, 6th Ward Alderman Mike Saville and community partners.
The event includes free food, games and school supplies. Parents and children must both be present to receive supplies.
The Back-to-School Fair will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10, at Greene Field Park, 774 Illinois Ave., Aurora.
Alderman Garza’s Ward 2 Ice Cream Social — Aug. 12
On Sunday, Aug. 12, 2nd Ward Alderman Juany Garza and the Ward 2 Committee host the 13th Annual Ice Cream Social.
The event includes free food, ice cream, face painting, school supplies and performances from Those Funny Little People and Bomboncita the Clown.
The Ward 2 Ice Cream Social will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 12, at McCarty Park, 350 E. Galena Blvd.
Alderman Hart-Burns’ Back-to-School Bash — Aug. 19
On Sunday, Aug. 19, 7th Ward Alderman Scheketa Hart-Burns, Main Baptist Church and community partners will host the 31st Annual Back-to-School Bash at Martin Luther King Park.
There will be free food, t-shirts, haircuts, hair styling and school supplies for students. Special guests include the cast of Broadway’s “Lion King,” New Direction and many more.
The Back-to-School Bash will be held from 1 p.m.to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 19, at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, at the corner of Farnsworth Avenue and Grand Boulevard.
