A Huntley man has been sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to his sixth DUI offense.

Richard W. Broz, 59, Friday, agreed to a sentence of seven years’ imprisonment in the Illinois Department of Corrections in exchange for a guilty plea to the offense of aggravated DUI, Class X felony.

Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Ryan Steger stated in court that at about 7:30 p.m. Nov. 5, 2016, Broz was driving his motorcycle southwest on Russell Road in Plato Township when Broz and the motorcycle left the roadway, bounced off a tree and became entangled in a barbed-wire fence.

A witness found Broz a short time later slumped over the motorcycle with his legs tangled in the handlebars. Paramedics needed an hour to free Broz from the barbed wire. About two hours after the crash, medical personnel at St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin measured Broz’s blood-alcohol concentration at .246 percent.

The offense was a Class X in this case because of Broz’s history of DUI offenses. His previous DUI convictions were in 1986, 1988, 1992 and twice in 2006.

In addition to the prison term, Broz was ordered to pay $7,820 in fees and fines, which includes a $5,000 fine because he was operating a motor vehicle when his BAC was above .160 percent.

According to Illinois law, Broz is eligible for day-for-day sentencing. The Kane County Sheriff’s Office investigated the case.
