Batavia Referendum Will Ask Citizens About Home Rule

Batavia Referendum Will Ask Citizens About Home Rule

  • Editor’s Note: This article is part of a series about the candidates and referendums on the ballot for the Nov. 6, 2018, General Election. Kane County Connects encourages citizens to take part in the election process and to seek multiple sources to inform their voting decisions.

A petition has been filed with the Batavia city clerk to put the following question on the Nov. 6, 2018 ballot:

“Shall the City of Batavia cease to be a home rule unit?”

“The city may not use public resources either to advocate for or against this proposition, but we want to make every effort to provide voters with factual information so that they may make an informed decision,” the city of Batavia says on its website.

For that purpose, the city has created a page where residents can find helpful information for education about what home rule allows and also the limits of home rule authority.

The city intends to add to these educational materials and to hold meetings to respond to any questions that you may have about home rule.
