Electronics, Books Recycling Event Set For Saturday in St. Charles

Kane County Recycles is hosting a recycling event for electronics and books between 8 a.m. and noon Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018, at the Kane County Branch Court office at 540 S. Randall Road in St. Charles.

The branch court is across from the Kane County Fairgrounds, just north of IL Route 38 and south of IL Route 64.

Wait time is likely to be less than five minutes for this event, said Kane County Recycling Coordinator Jennifer Jarland.

The countywide event is for electronics and books only. It will NOT include document shredding or paint recycling. The next shredding and paint event will be on Nov. 10.

Electronics collection will include computers, laptops, stereos, DVD players, printers, keyboards, mice, phones, electronic games, holiday light strings and more — all of which can be recycled at no charge. Books are also free to drop off.

Televisions and computer monitors of any size and any age also will be collected, but there is a fee for recycling them.

The cost for recycling TVs and computer monitors is $25 apiece for screens under 21 inches, measured diagonally, and $35 for screens 21 inches or more.

You can pay onsite with cash or card.

Electronics are collected and recycled by eWorks Electronics Services, a non-profit organization whose mission is to employ individuals with developmental disabilities to sort and disassemble the electronic equipment. Your payment for TVs and monitors goes directly to them and helps fund that work.

Books of any age or condition, and both hardcover and paperback, are free to drop off. They are sorted and redistributed by Pacesetter Books, a church-based non-profit that assesses books for reusability and recycles those that cannot be redistributed.

You can also bring shredded documents to the book recycling area for recycling if you like! This is for documents you have shredded at home, which can no longer go in the recycling bin.

Kane County has two electronics recycling drop-off locations that are open Monday through Friday every week, except for holidays.
