At 10:37 a.m. this morning (Thursday, Sept. 13, 2018), the Elgin Fire Department was notified of an activated smoke detector alarm in a home on the 900 block of Hillcrest Road by an offsite alarm monitoring company.

The first Elgin Fire Department engine company arrived on the scene in just over five minutes. Upon investigation, the crew immediately determined there was, in fact, a fire in the home.

Crews quickly extinguished the fire and completed a search ensuring no occupants were home.

No injuries were reported to either civilians or fire department personnel. The estimated fire loss inside the home was $11,000.

Elgin Fire Chief Dave Schmidt would like to reinforce the importance of working smoke detectors.

“In this case, the occupants’ alarm company was notified by activated smoke detectors,” he said. “This rapid notification resulted in minimal fire damage to the home.”
