Good Samaritan Struck, Killed By Truck When Assisting Vehicle on Randall Road
Two people were injured and one man killed when they were struck by a truck while trying to assist a vehicle Friday on Randall Road.
According to a Batavia Police Department Facebook page post, officers were dispatched at 4:50 a.m. Friday to the 500 block of North Randall Road.
The preliminary investigation revealed that two subjects were assisting a disabled vehicle in the northbound outside lane of Randall Road when the disabled vehicle and two subjects were struck by a truck traveling north.
One person was transported to an area hospital and is being treated for serious injuries. A second person was transported to an area hospital for evaluation. A third subject, identified by the Kane County Coroner’s Office as Nicholas Ortiz, 48, of Montgomery was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Coroner’s Office said Oritz was outside of his vehicle assisting another motorist when the incident occurred.
The cause and manner of death is under investigation by the Kane County Coroner’s Office. An autopsy was performed on Sept. 14, 2018, and the preliminary cause of death was multiple injuries due to the incident.
Toxicology samples were sent to the forensic laboratory for further analysis.
The Kane County Coroner’s Office is cooperating with Batavia police and fire agencies in the ongoing investigation of the incident.
