Help Harvest Seeds Sept. 29, Oct. 27 at Fermilab Natural Areas

The public is invited to join the Fermilab Natural Areas organization for two separate days of seed collection — from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 29 and Oct. 27, 2018.

Volunteers will lead groups out into the prairie to collect seed from various native prairie plants essential to our restoration efforts.

“Here’s a chance to give back to the environment,” said Maureen Huey, one of the event organizers. “We will supply tools, but it would be helpful if you could bring hand clippers, a paper bag and gloves if you have them.”

A free hotdog lunch will be provided.

Follow the signs to the main ring, wear sturdy shoes and enjoy the day with Fermilab Natural Areas. Visitors are required to present a driver’s license at the security gate.

The Fermilab Natural Areas organization, formed in 2006, is a not for profit, all volunteer network dedicated to restoring, managing and enhancing the natural areas and resources of Fermilab in order to maintain and improve ecological health and biodiversity.

FNA does not receive funding from Fermilab or the federal government and depend on membership, donations and grants to fund its operations. Throughout the year, FNA conducts work events where volunteers come together to participate in organized restoration projects.

“We aim to conserve, restore and study the natural areas within Fermilab while encouraging employees and neighbors to experience and enjoy Fermilab’s natural beauty,” Huey said.
