According to an Algonquin Police Department news release and media reports, officials discovered a social media video of a student holding a handgun early Wednesday morning.

“Beginning at 3:54 a.m., the Algonquin Police Department received information of a rumored threat of violence directed at H.D. Jacobs High School,” the news release said. “Out of caution and working in cooperation with Community Unit District 300 and the school, a shelter-in-place protocol was initiated by school administration and additional officers were assigned to the school for security.”

A shelter-in-place protocol typically prevents any access to and from the building.

School officials said the threat was not credible.

“The Algonquin Police Department has not received any first-hand reports of any direct threats against the school or any individuals,” the news release said.

Police said they are investigating the incident and the origins of the rumor.
