Halloween is Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2018, and little goblins and ghosts will be going door to door trick-or-treating in communities throughout Kane County.

Some communities haven’t yet put out news releases and social media posts on trick-or-treat hours for 2018, so we’ll update this post as they become available. Bookmark this article and visit it often.

Kane County Halloween Happenings, Safety Tips
The following are some Halloween-related events and news releases for the 2018 season.
Aurora
Residents Invited To Trick-Or-Treat at City Hall
Aurora families are invited to trick-or-treat at Aurora City Hall on Halloween.
From 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31, City Hall will host costumed trick-or-treaters as they visit city departments on all five floors for candy, treats and special handouts.
“Last year, we had more than 1,000 visitors to City Hall on Halloween,” said Mayor Richard C. Irvin. “We look forward to welcoming even more this year. Parents and children will have an opportunity to tour City Hall as they stop in each department and get an early start to the evening Halloween activities.”
Official citywide trick-or-treating hours in the city of Aurora begin at 4 p.m. and end at 7:30 p.m.
Mayor Irvin and City staff will be dressed for the occasion and will greet trick-or-treaters throughout the building.
Aurora City Hall is located at 44 E. Downer Place.
Batavia
Batavia residents compete for scariest house decorations this October
Get your ghosts and goblins out of storage because the Batavia Park District will be hosting its first ever Halloween House Decorating Contest. Prizes will be awarded for Best Overall Theme and People’s Choice.
“The Holiday House Decorating Contest has been popular the past few years, and residents have been asking for a Halloween version,” explained Katie Drum, Director of Marketing and Public Relations at the Park District.
All displays will be judged between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24. Winners will receive a Batavia Park District prize package. This contest is for Batavia residents only. Addresses of all entries will be published in local media unless specified otherwise at the time of registration.
People’s Choice voting will take place from Oct. 25 to Oct. 30 on the district’s Facebook page and the house with the most “likes” wins! To register, call or visit the Batavia Park District offices. Registration deadline is October 23 and there is just a $5 fee to participate.

BatFest Oct. 27 Festival in Downtown Batavia
BatFest is Batavia’s annual Halloween themed family event attracting over 3,000 ghouls. BatFest includes, downtown Trick-or-Treating, Mothers’ Club Parade, pumpkin bowl, contests BatArt and games for free family fun. BatFest will be held in downtown Batavia this Saturday, Oct. 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Here are some of the activities that will be going on at this year’s BatFest:
- Downtown Trick-or-Treating from 10 a.m. to noon.
- The final Farmers’ Market of the season
- Pumpkins! That includes the Pumpkin Roll down Houston St., which is $1 per roll and a bring your own pumpkin seed spitting contest. There will also be a pumpkin carving battle hosted by Water Street Studios.
- Stories and Songs at the Library at 11:30 a.m.
- Dance Monster Mash at 10:30 a.m. and Thriller at 12:45 p.m.
- Costume Contest on the Main Stage at 12:15 p.m.
- Pet Costume Contest at 1 p.m.

Experience the Horrors at Haunted Quarry

Was that just the wind blowing in the trees or is someone walking up behind you? Swimming season has ended but that doesn’t mean all is quiet at the quarry. Face your fears and experience all the nightmares that await you at the Haunted Quarry!
Haunted Quarry, 400 S. Water St., will be open from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13 and Oct. 20 and is not suitable for kids under 10.

Halloween Safety Tips
The village of Bartlett has set Halloween trick-or-treat hours from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31. Residents are encouraged to turn on their front porch light if they want to pass out candy on Halloween.
To have a safe and fun Halloween, the Bartlett Police Department offers these important safety tips for trick-or-treating:
- Children are reminded to bring their Halloween candy home and have their parents properly inspect the candy before eating it.
- A parent or responsible adult should always accompany young children.
- Older children should walk together with a large group of friends and stay in their immediate neighborhoods.
- Children should always walk on the sidewalk and should avoid trick-or-treating near busy streets.
- Motorists are reminded to drive carefully in residential neighborhoods and watch out for children crossing the street.
- Children should carry glow sticks or flashlights when trick-or-treating during the evening hours and only go to homes where the porch light is on.
- Children should never enter a residence or a vehicle to accept Halloween candy.
The Bartlett Police Department will be conducting extra patrols in residential neighborhoods on Halloween. You should immediately dial 9-1-1 if you observe any suspicious activity during trick-or-treating.

Halloween Safety — And Police Carrying Treats
Halloween is a fun tradition that due to the excitement can cause children to forget to be careful. The major dangers are not from witches or spirits but rather from falls and pedestrian car crashes.
The Elburn Police Department is encouraging that all parents take into consideration the safety tips provided by the National Safety Council in an effort to make Halloween a safe event in Elburn.
To provide consistency in celebrating this event, the official Elburn Halloween date and hours of “Trick or Treating” are 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31.
“We ask that porch lights be left on for additional safety during those hours and ask that parents walk with their children when possible,” Police Chief Nick Sikora said. “The Elburn Police Department officers will be very visible in the residential areas during those hours and will also be carrying treats.”

It is hard to believe that fall is already here. The summer season absolutely flew by quickly.
With the fall season comes cooler weather, football, and of course Halloween. The Geneva Police Department would like to take this opportunity to provide some safety reminders for those who plan on trick-or-treating this year. We recommend that Halloween trick-or-treating be conducted between 3 and 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31.The Police Department also recommends following these safety guidelines:
- Wear light colored clothing or some type of reflective material for better visibility;
- Ensure costumes fit and are worn in a manner that prevents tripping;
- If children wear masks, make sure they can see clearly and their visibility is not obstructed;
- Small children should always be accompanied by an adult;
- It is best to trick or treat in groups;
- Go out in daylight when possible and carry a flashlight for use if out after dark;
- Only give and accept wrapped candy;
- Examine all candy before allowing children to eat it;
- Carrying hard props such as swords and daggers should be avoided. Substitute hard props with foam rubber props;
- Stay within familiar neighborhoods. Only visit homes where you know the residents; and
- Watch for traffic

Montgomery Announces Halloween Display Contest
The Montgomery Beautification Committee will be sponsoring a Halloween Display Contest again this year. The participation and interest in this event has been wonderful.
This is an opportunity for homes and businesses to be recognized for exceptional imagination and spooktacular atmosphere, creating fun for all ages. Here is your chance to share your Halloween Decorations for Special Recognition.
Decorations should be “PG-13” – family friendly, nothing too inappropriate for children and neighbors to see. It will be up to the judges’ discretion to determine whether a presentation is inappropriate. All decorations must be visible from the sidewalk as judging will take place from the sidewalk only.
Beautification Committee members will give special recognition awards to homes based on their entire presentation. Residents can nominate their own property or someone else’s simply by submitting the property address.
Properties nominated must be located within the village limits and does not include unincorporated areas. On Oct. 17, committee members and volunteer judges will visit all nominated addresses in order to select the winners. A sign will be placed that evening in front of the properties selected.
A list of winning addresses will be published, with names omitted.
Nominations will be accepted now through Oct. 15 and judging will take place the evening of Oct. 17. You can nominate a property via the village website or by calling the village of Montgomery Public Works Department at 630-896-9241.
