The Illinois Department of Natural Resources has lifted the recreational boating restriction on the Fox River in Kane County as of 9 a.m. today (Thursday, Oct. 18, 2018).

The Fox River at the Algonquin Tailwater gauge is indicating the river is dropping below flood stage.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources had announced Oct. 7 that the Fox River in Kane County was closed for recreational boating until further notice due to high water levels.

According to the IDNR website, the closure ran from the mouth of Pistakee Lake to Montgomery Dam.

According to the National Weather Service Chicago, a Flood Warning continues at the Algonquin Tailwater until this afternoon (Thursday, Oct. 18, 2018). At 8:30 a.m., the stage was exactly at flood stage: 9.5 feet/

The river is expected to fall below flood stage today.

Stream Gauges on the Fox River

The U.S. Geological Service’s National Water Information System maintains a network of stream gauges in partnership with state and local agencies. From the USGS “Current Conditions for Illinois” webpage:

“Streamgages are used nationwide to predict and address drought and flood conditions by monitoring water availability. The USGS and more than 850 federal, state, and local agencies cooperatively fund the USGS streamgaging network, which consists of over 8,000 streamgages.

Streamflow in Illinois is monitored in cooperation with state, county, and other federal agencies.”
