More About Drug Takeback Day
Did you know that medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse? Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are extremely high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.
Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, disposing of unused medicines like flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash — both pose potential safety and health hazards.
The Oct. 27 takeback is the 16th in eight years. Its goal is to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.
The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.
The APD notes that it cannot accept liquids, needles, inhalers or sharps — only pills or patches. Also, drugs dropped off before 10 a.m. or after 2 p.m. cannot be accepted.
Last April, Americans turned in 475 tons (nearly one million pounds) of prescription drugs at over 5,800 sites operated by the DEA and more than 4,600 of its state and local law enforcement partners.
Overall, in its 15 previous Take Back events, DEA and its partners have taken in just under ten million pounds — more than 4,982 tons — of pills.
