2018 Illinois Report Card: Kane County Has 23 Exemplary, 20 Underperforming Schools
- Editor’s Note: This the first of an ongoing series of stories on Kane County schools and their performance in the 2018 Illinois School Report Card
Kane County schools fared well in the recently released Illinois Report Card 2017-18 — although there is plenty of room for improvement.
Overall, the Illinois State Board of Education rated 3,888 schools. Of those 376 were classified as “Exemplary,” 2,636 as “Commendable,” 561 as “Underperforming,” and 205 as “Lowest Performing.”
No school in Kane County was ranked as a “Lowest Performing School.”
On the good news side, 23 public schools in Kane County were rated “Exemplary” and the vast majority of schools — 113 of 164 — were rated “Commendable.” Several schools did not receive any summative designation.
That means about 83 percent of Kane County schools achieved a rating of “Commendable” or better. That compares to about 77.5 percent statewide.
Seven Kane County districts earned one or more “Exemplary” designations:
- St. Charles School District 303 tallied eight “Exemplary” and eight “Commendable” designations.
- CUSD 300 tallied seven “Exemplary” and 18 “Commendable” designations.
- Central CUSD 301 tallied four “Exemplary” and three “Commendable” designations.
- West Aurora School District 129 tallied one “Exemplary” and 10 “Commendable” designations.
- Batavia School District 101 tallied one “Exemplary” and seven “Commendable” designations.
- Geneva School District 304 tallied one “Exemplary” and seven “Commendable” designations.
- Kaneland School District 302 tallied one “Exemplary” and five “Commendable” designations.
The room for improvement comes from the 20 Kane County schools the ISBE rated as “Underperforming.” They include seven schools in East Aurora School District 131, four in West Aurora School District 129, one in Geneva School District 304 and eight in School District U-46, the latter of which encompasses many communities and is the second-largest school district in Illinois.
Many local school districts are still trying to determine exactly what criteria pushed schools into the “Underperforming” category. (See this Daily Herald story for more information.)
“This year, the Illinois State Board of Education has updated the report card to provide a full picture of school performance beyond just test scores,” the ISBE says at the top of each school’s report card.
The school report cards include a myriad of data, about each district and each school, including total enrollment, racial makeup, “chronic absenteeism,” mobility rate, finances, revenue sources and academy performance.
Future articles will provide a deeper dive into the information the ISBE reports on Kane County schools, but you can review the data right away.
