The clever use of a cell-phone app, quick action by a victim and the partnership of local police agencies and an off-duty police officer helped Huntley police capture two Florida men after a Thursday car-burglary report that started at a day-care center and ended with a high-speed chase on IL Route 47.

The two men — Victor A. Ogiste, 22, and Calvin M. Rogers, 23, both of Fort Lauderdale, FL — now face felony burglary charges as well as misdemeanor charges for theft and trespass. Rogers faces additional charges related to the chase.

According to a Huntley Police Department news release, police received a report at about 8:22 p.m. Thursday (Nov. 8, 2018) of a burglary to a motor vehicle at a child care facility on the 12500 block of Princeton Drive.

Police said the victim described the items that were taken from the vehicle, one being a cellular telephone, and witnesses described the suspect vehicle as a white pickup truck with tinted windows.

The victim was able to access the location app on her cell phone, which showed the device was about a half-mile north of the theft location, along Illinois Route 47, police said.

A second officer proceeded to another child care facility located in the 11400 block of Rainsford Drive and observed a vehicle matching the description of the pickup. Police said the truck then exited the facility at a high rate of speed, northbound on Illinois Route 47.

The information was passed along to surrounding police agencies, and the suspect vehicle was observed first in the village of Lakewood and  later driving at a high rate of speed south on Illinois Route 47.

“The vehicle was driving in an aggressive manner and struck several vehicles on Illinois Route 47,” the Huntley police news release said.

In the area of Illinois Route 47 and Regency Square Parkway, the pickup came to a stop due to flat tires, and the occupants fled on foot, east from the vehicle.

Two suspects were apprehended, with the assistance of an off-duty police officer, in a construction site located at 12380 IL Route 47.

Ogiste was charged with Burglary (a Class 2 felony), as well as Theft and Criminal Trespass to a Vehicle, both Class A misdemeanors.

Rogers was charged with Burglary (a Class 2 felony), plus Theft, Criminal Trespass to a Vehicle, two counts of Reckless Driving, two counts of Improper Lane Use and two counts of Leaving The Scene of a Property Damage Accident.

Both subjects were transported to the Kane County jail to await a bond hearing.

The charges are not proof of guilt. Rogers and Ogiste are presumed innocent and are entitled to a fair trial where it is the burden of the state to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
