Last Recycling Event of The Year Is Saturday, Nov. 10
The last Kane County recycling event of 2018 is a biggie — for electronics, books, liquid latex paint and document shredding.
The event is set for 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Kane County Branch Court parking lot, 540 S. Randall Road in St. Charles.
The Nov. 10 event also is a biggie because the next Kane County recycling event will not be until Saturday, April 13, 2019. The April gig will be for electronics and books only.
Keep in mind, though, that you can always visit Kane County electronics recycling drop-offs year round —give days a week, eight hours a day. See the Kane County Recycles website for more details on the drop-offs.
Here’s what you need to know for the Nov. 10 event:
Electronics
You can recycle electronics — computers, keyboards, laptops, printers, televisions and computer monitors, stereos, cell phones, microwaves, Christmas lights, and more.
“We unload for you!” Kane County Recycling Coordinator Jennifer Jarland said, using an exclamation point.
There’s a fee for recycling TVs and computer monitors, which is payable by cash or card. (Scroll down for fee details.) All other electronic items are free to drop off. Click this link for full list of accepted and non-accepted electronic items.
The county works with longtime partner eWorks Recycling Services, an R2 certified electronics recycler, for the collection and processing of all electronics. The fee for TV and monitor recycling is paid directly to eWorks, a non-profit whose main mission is to employ people with developmental disabilities.
Books
“We take books of any age and condition for reuse or recycling!” Jarland said.
The county works with a local non-profit company called Pacesetter Books that recovers as many books as possible for reuse, and with WestRock, paper manufacturers who recycle the remainder of books into new paper products at their plant in Aurora.
Paint
Kane County will be taking liquid latex and oil paint at this event, for the purpose of reuse and recycling.
The county’s service provider, ePaint Recycling Solutions, recycles upwards of 98 percent of the paint collected as well as the metal and plastic containers. The recycled, blended-color latex paint is redistributed through Habitat for Humanity locations.
ePaint also accepts oil paint for a per-can fee, but please note that you can take oil-based paint to the Naperville Household Waste Facility for free. Naperville does not accept latex paint, only oil-based paints and stains. For more info on paint, see this link.
Liquid latex and oil paint have a recycling fee per container payable by cash or check. Once again, scroll down for costs.
Confidential Document Destruction
The county will have document shredding service trucks on site.
The service is for residential use only. (NO businesses, please.)
Staples, paperclips, envelope windows are OK to leave in. Remove all large binder clips and plastic folders. All paper collected will be shredded onsite, then taken for recycling. More guidelines can be found here.
The county is presently working with Accurate Document Destruction for this excellent service, which is provided for free to residents of Kane County. The cost of the program is covered by Grand Victoria Riverboat grant funds.
