Police ID Man Found Dead in Wooded Area of St. Charles

The St. Charles Police Department is investigating the death of a 45-year-old man who body was found lying in the snow of a wooded area near Oak Street and West Main Street.

According to a St. Charles Police Department news release, a citizen reported at around 5:22 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, that he was concerned for an employee’s well-being.

Police said the individual was believed to be homeless and had reportedly been living in a tent in a wooded area near Oak Street and West Main Street.

Police checked that area and found a man later identified as Neil A. Scroggin, 45, lying in the snow. St. Charles Fire Department paramedics and Kane County Coroner’s Office personnel responded.

Scroggin was pronounced deceased at the scene.

“The St Charles Police Department is working with the Kane County Coroner’s Office to try and determine the cause and manner of death,” St. Charles Police Department Deputy Chief Erik Mahan said in the news release. “Investigators have been surveying the area where Mr. Scroggin’s body was found and interviewing those who knew or may have last had contact with him.”

An autopsy was performed. Police said there is no indication of foul play, but toxicology reports are still pending.
