The highest number so far this season is in Jackson County in southern Illinois, where hunters have harvested 2,439 deer.

The preliminary harvest for the second segment of the firearm season on Nov. 29 through Dec. 2 was 22,060, compared with 28,656 during the second season in 2017.  The preliminary harvest for the first segment of firearm season on Nov. 16-18 was 58,836 deer.

How to Get a Permit

Permits for the counties open to the Late-Winter and Special CWD Seasons are sold over the counter by license vendors.

Permits will be available beginning Dec. 11 through the end of the season.

In addition to permits issued specifically for these seasons, persons hunting on private land may also use an unfilled deer permit valid for the previous firearm, muzzleloader or youth deer season and valid for one of the open counties. Unfilled firearm, muzzleloader* or youth deer permits are valid only for the county for which they were originally issued, and unfilled landowner firearm deer permits are valid only on their owned, leased, or rented farmland in the open counties. *Hunters using an unfilled muzzleloader deer permit may only use a muzzleloading rifle.

A number of state-owned properties are open to these seasons, some of which require a Special Hunt Area Permit that is obtained through a lottery drawing.
