Santa Run in Sleepy Hollow Postponed To Dec. 15-16
The Rutland-Dundee Firemen’s Association 45th Annual Santa Run had to be postponed last weekend due to the weather.
The areas that were missed — which included most of Sleepy Hollow — have been rescheduled.
- Dec 15 – West of Sleepy Hollow Road
- Dec 16 – East of Sleepy Hollow Road
The run begins at 3 p.m.
But it’s not really a race, like 5K Fun Run. The Santa Run actually is a community food drive and fundraiser.
Each year since 1973, the Rutland-Dundee Firemen’s Association drives a truck (in past years, it was an ambulance) through the streets of Sleepy Hollow, Gilberts and the unincorporated areas of Rutland and Dundee townships.
Residents hurry out of their homes or leave food donations, which go to the FISH Food Pantry in Carpentersville, Food For Greater Elgin and Community Crisis Center of Elgin.
In 2016, the FISH pantry helped feed 6,000 families. Food For Greater Elgin feeds 1,200 families per month. And Community Crisis Center of Elgin houses more than 40 women and children who are homeless and have been subject to domestic violence.
The Santa Runa also includes a communitywide raffle, where folks have a chance to win cash prizes and make a donation that goes to the purchase of rescue items.
Items purchased from the raffle proceeds in 2018 include Feedback CPR Manikins to assist with the Department’s CPR training program offered to district residents.
