Veterans, Youth Honored at Pearl Harbor Day Luncheon

Pearl Harbor heroes and a Pearl Harbor survivor from Elgin were honored at the 49th annual memorial luncheon Monday, Dec. 10, at Gaslite Manor Banquets in Aurora.

The event was co-sponsored by Aurora Rotary Club and Aurora Council 247 Navy League of the U.S.

V​eterans were honored and achievement awards were presented to local high school students. A color guard posted the colors.

Elgin resident Everitt Schlegel, 99, was the lone Pearl Harbor survivor honored at the luncheon. He was stationed at the Army’s Schofield barracks when the attack occurred.

Youth honored at the event included Janice Sefah, Yorkville High School; Christina Schulenberg, Aurora Christian High School; Fabian Rangel, Marmion Academy; Javier Munoz, East Aurora High School; Robert McCarthy, Aurora Central Catholic High School; Alaina Fleming, Rosary High School.; Emma Gatz, Metea Valley High School; Shruti Kolli, Waubonsie Valley High School; Cassandra Kuissi, Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy; and Araceli Mercado, West Aurora High School.
