UPDATE: What’s Closed/Open New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day 2018-19
Happy New Year!
But, wait — you’ve got some questions before you set out in your party hat.
Is the train schedule changed for New Year’s Eve? Is my library or park district facility open on Monday? Are hours changed for the big-box stores? Is “what’s open/closed” pretty much the same pattern as — or completely different than — the Christmas holiday one week earlier?
Inquiring minds want to know these things, so this article contains a few answers to your FAQs.
What’s closed and what’s open on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day is complicated because the holiday falls on a Tuesday. And what applied to the Christmas weekend doesn’t necessarily follow this coming New Year’s weekend.
Your big-name retail stores, for example, are almost flip-flopped from the Christmas schedule, with many closing early on New Year’s Eve but open on New Year’s Day. Be sure to see the chart below for specifics.
Regarding government offices, the Illinois Secretary of State’s offices took off both Monday, Dec. 24, and Tuesday, Dec. 25, for the Christmas holiday but doesn’t follow the same pattern for the New Year’s Eve/Day. According to the Secretary of State’s website, the facilities are open Monday, Dec. 31.
In fact, there are anomalies all over the place.
Local units of government, businesses and public transportation have their own, unique schedules, and it’s truly a mixed bag this year, with some taking New Year’s Eve Day off and others going full steam ahead.
Kane County non-emergency offices are open New Year’s Eve, closed New Year’s Day. But good old workaholic Kane County Connects is actually going to take a day off Monday as well as the New Year’s Day holiday.
After New Year’s Day, you’ll have to check the schedule for your town’s garbage pick-up, which generally is delayed one day after a holiday.
And there are a few more surprises, so be sure to scroll down for the lowdown.
