The Kane County Sheriff’s Office is promoting two opportunities at local high schools to see an amazing presentation about the signs and symptoms of teenager drug and alcohol abuse — one in Geneva and another in Burlington.

Both presentations feature powerhouse speakers who can help parents and caregivers develop strategies for intervention with youth. A resource fair is included.

But the truly unusual aspect is a life-size exhibit of a teen’s bedroom, which highlights warning signs that can indicate drug or alcohol use.

The bedroom features more than 20 “red flags” that identify spots where teens may hide drugs, household items that can be used as drug paraphernalia and ways teens try to cover up drug and alcohol use.

Geneva Presentation

The Geneva presentation takes place from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, at Geneva High School, 416 McKinley Ave.

“Our goal is to educate parents and other adults who are influential in the lives of youth so they know what seemingly innocent items can actually be an indication of substance abuse,” the District 304 website says.

The experience will include signs and symptoms of alcohol and drug use, a guided tour of the bedroom and prevention strategies for parents. Participants will also receive a 30 page resource handbook.

Burlington Presentation

Central District 301, in partnership with the Kane County Juvenile Justice Council, is inviting residents to Wake Up Call, a presentation for parents and guardians of students in middle or high school.

The presentation will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, in the Central High School auditorium, with the resource fair beginning at 6 p.m. in the CHS commons.

This presentation teaches guardians about the signs and symptoms associated with substance abuse, current drug trends, parenting strategies to prevent substance use, and more.

During this presentation, participants receive a guided tour of a bedroom highlighting more than 20 “red flags” that can signal drug or alcohol use as well as household items that can be used as drug paraphernalia and ways teens try to cover up drug and alcohol use.
