Many local units of government, schools, businesses and non-profit organizations will close for all or part of the day Thursday, Jan. 31, 2019.

Here’s what we know as of 10:30 a.m. Thursday. Be sure to check back for updates.

Banks

• The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago is open Thursday. (No mention of closing on the website.
• However, the Federal Reserve Money Museum is closed through Thursday due to cold.
• Most local banks appear to be open on Thursday. (A quick Google search sampling does not show any are closed Thursday due to the cold.)

Businesses

• Most retail businesses are open Thursday, Jan. 31, 2019. That includes department stores, restaurants and grocery stores. (But again, it never hurts to call ahead.)

• City of Aurora offices will reopen at noon on Thursday, Jan. 31.
• City of Batavia offices appear open on Thursday. (No closing announcement on website.)
• Village of Big Rock. (No info on website.)
• Village of Campton Hills. (No info on website.)
• Village of Carpentersville offices appear open. (No closing announcement on website.)
• Village of East Dundee offices appear open. (No closing announcement on website or Facebook page regarding Thursday.)

• Village of Maple Park offices are closed Thursday. (Offices will re-open at 9 a.m. Friday, Feb. 1, and remain open until 3 p.m. Friday.)
  
• Village of Montgomery offices will reopen at 8 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 31.
  
• Village of North Aurora offices appear open Thursday. (No mention on website of closing offices.)
  
• Village of Pingree Grove appear open Thursday. (No mention on website of closing offices.)

Libraries are a mixed bag.

• Algonquin Area Public Library (Closed Wednesday, Jan. 30, delayed opening to 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31)
• Aurora Public Library (West Branch and Santori Library will remain open on Wednesday, Jan. 30, and Thursday, Jan. 31, during normal business hours with limited services. Eola Branch will be closed Wednesday, and open by noon Thursday.) 
• Bartlett Public Library (Closed all day Wednesday and Thursday. Resume at 9 a.m. Friday.)
• Batavia Public Library (Closed Wednesday, opening at noon Thursday.)
• Big Rock Public Library (Weather Closing: If the Hinckley-Big Rock schools are closed because of severe weather, the library will also be closed.)
• Elgin Community College Library (No mention of closing.)
• Ella Johnson Memorial Public Library (Closed Wednesday and Thursday. Open at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 1.)
• Fox River Valley Libraries (Due to the extreme cold, both the Dundee and Randall Oaks libraries will remain closed until 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31.)
• Gail Borden Public Library (The Main Library, Rakow Branch and South Elgin Branch will be affected:
  • Thursday, Jan. 31 – Closed all day.
• Geneva Public Library (The library will be closing at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 29.  Stay tuned for further updates.)
• Huntley Area Public Library  (Closed Wednesday, Jan. 30, and open from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31. Library book drops will also be CLOSED until noon Thursday, and fines will be adjusted accordingly.  All library programs are also cancelled.)
• Kane County Law Library (Closed Wednesday, Jan. 30, and Thursday, Jan. 31.)
• Kaneville Public Library (Closed Wednesday, Jan. 30, and reopen for regular Thursday hours.)
• Maple Park Public Library (Closed Wednesday, Jan. 30. Planning to open at 12:30 p.m. Thursday.)
• Messenger Public Library of North Aurora (Closed all day Wednesday, Jan. 30. Plans to reopen at 9 a.m. Thursday.)
• St. Charles Public Library (Library services and programs canceled Wednesday, Jan. 30. Emergency warming center is open.)
• Sugar Grove Public Library (Closed all day Wednesday, Thursday is to be determined.)
• Town & Country Public Library District (Closed Wednesday. All programs cancelled Wednesday and Thursday.)

• Most community colleges, colleges and universities are either closed or have a late start Thursday.
  • Aurora University (Due to weather, all AU locations will remain closed through Thursday, Jan. 31. No classes or events will be held and administrative offices will be closed. Barring unforeseen circumstances, the university expects to return to normal operations at all locations on Friday.)
  • Elgin Community College (Elgin Community College will be closed Thursday (Jan. 31). Normal business hours resume Friday morning (Feb. 1). 
  • Judson University (Judson’s Elgin and Rockford campuses will have a late start at noon Thursday, Jan. 31)
  • Rasmussen College (No mention on website regarding school closure.)
  • Waubonsee Community College (​On Thursday, the college will open at 11:30 a.m. and employees are expected to report at that time. Waubonsee will have a late start Thursday. All classes and activities scheduled to start prior to noon are canceled. Classes starting at noon or later will proceed as scheduled.)
