Heads Up! Dangerous Winds Tuesday (Jan. 8)

The National Weather Service Chicago has issued a Wind Advisory for Kane County and the surrounding area from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday (Jan. 8, 2019).

In addition to Kane, the advisory affects Winnebago, Boone, McHenry, Lake, Ogle, Lee, DeKalb, DuPage, Cook, LaSalle, Kendall, Grundy, Will, Kankakee, Livingston, Iroquois and Ford counties.

  • Timing: Mid morning Tuesday through early evening.
  • Winds: West wind, gusts to 45 or 50 mph.
  • Impacts: Difficult travel for high profile vehicles. Loose objects will be blown about. Minor damage to tree limbs are possible.

A Wind Advisory means that sustained winds of 30 mph and/or wind gusts of 45 mph or greater are expected. Kane County’s forecast says gusts could be as high as 50 mph.

“Winds this strong can make driving difficult — especially for high profile vehicles,” the NWS news release said. “Use extra caution.”

The Weather Service says to expect minor tree damage and possibly sporadic power outages. Winds will only gradually subside Tuesday night, with gusts still around 30 mph at daybreak Wednesday.
