A historic Geneva home is receiving a new address today (Tuesday, Jan. 15), as the building is moved from State Street (Route 38) to East Side Drive.

The house started relocated at 9 a.m. from its previous location at 122 E. State St., weather permitting.

The wide truck trailer required closing State Street’s eastbound lanes and the interior westbound lane from Bennett Street (IL Route 25) to East Side Drive.

One utility line had to be taken down temporarily on State Street.

All lanes of East Side Drive were shut down from State to Division streets to accommodate the move to the home’s new address at 822 East Side Drive, north of Good Templar Park.

The trip’s northbound segment is taking longer given the need to move several overhead utility lines and align the truck properly to remove the structure from the trailer.

A builder purchased the East State Street parcel with intentions to develop the property. The developer provided an opportunity for the vacant home to be relocated, and the home was purchased by Adam Gibbons, who has organized the move to East Side Drive.

Known as the Miller-Gully house, the home was built in 1839 by early settlers near the east bank of the Fox River. A distillery once resided on site, and the home was sold during the Civil War to Dr. J.B. Gully, a local homeopathic physician. The Geneva History Museum awarded a historic plaque marker in 1981 to honor the residence.

A development proposal has not been submitted to the City for the East State Street property. When an application is filed, the City will post updates on its interactive online development map.
