Geneva led Kane County communities in Sunday (Jan. 13, 2019) snow totals — with a healthy 4.5 inches.

Elburn, Aurora, Batavia and St. Charles were in a four-way tie for second, with 4.0 inches apiece.

That’s nothing, however, compared to folks a little further downstate. Ashkum in Iroquois County topped the Illinois regional list, with 9.3 inches, according to statistics from the National Weather Service Chicago.

Generally speaking, we got more snow that was expected. Preliminary estimates had been for about 2 inches.

The slow-moving weather system produced widespread snow across the region late Friday night, Jan. 11, and during the entire day and evening of Saturday, Jan. 12. Snowfall rates in northern Illinois were light to moderate across most of the area, with some brief heavy snow observed south of I-80.

The system was responsible for significant amounts of snow across Missouri and into central Illinois.

• The highest snowfall totals in excess of 6 inches over a 12-hour span were observed south of I-80, in particular from southern LaSalle County through Livingston, Ford, and Iroqouis Counties in Illinois, and into Newton and Benton Counties in northwest Indiana.
• The official snowfall for Chicago was 2.5 inches as of 6 a.m. Sunday observed at Chicago O’Hare International Airport.
• The official snowfall for Rockford was 4.0 inches as of 6 a.m. Sunday observed at Chicago Rockford International Airport.
• Other snowfall amounts through 6 am Sunday morning include 2.1 inches at the NWS Chicago in Romeoville and 3.7 inches observed three miles southwest of Chicago Midway International Airport.

Weekend Snow Ahead

Here’s a look at the weather highlights and hazards for the upcoming weekend into early next week.

A storm system will move through the plains and to the northeast during this weekend. Accumulating snow with gusty winds is expected across the region beginning Friday (Jan. 18) evening and continuing into Saturday, possibly producing significant amounts.

Stay tuned as this storm gets closer, for any changes in the forecast track, but be prepared for winter weather again this weekend.

For late Saturday into Sunday, lake effect snow will be possible with a continuation of blowing and drifting snow. After the snow, the area will deal with some bitterly cold temperatures, as minimum wind chills could get as low as 20 degrees below zero.
