Two people are charged with selling two kilograms of black tar heroin that contained fentanyl.

The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office has charged 27-year-old Polet Bucio-Perez of Aurora and 43-year-old Jerardo Espinoza-Zepeda each with the offense of unlawful delivery of a controlled substance, a Class X felony.

If convicted, Bucio-Perez and Espinoza-Zepeda each face a sentence of between 15 and 60 years’ imprisonment in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Kane County prosecutors allege that on Feb. 8, 2019, the pair sold and delivered more than 2 kilograms of black tar heroin that contained fentanyl to an undercover officer who was working as part of a joint investigation being conducted by Kane County Sheriff’s detectives, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Elgin Police Department and the Chicago Police Department.

The heroin has a street value of approximately $1 million.

A Kane County judge set bail for each at $7 million with 10 percent ($700,000) to apply for bond.

The next court appearance for Bucio-Perez is set for 9 a.m. Feb. 21, 2019, in front of Kane County Associate Judge David R. Kliment in Courtroom 217 at the Kane County Judicial Center. The next court appearance for Espinoza-Zepeda is set for 9 a.m. Feb. 22, 2019, in front of Judge Kliment in the same courtroom.

Bucio-Perez and Espinoza-Zepeda remain in custody at the Kane County jail.

The charges against Espinoza-Zepeda and Bucio-Perez are not proof of guilt. Espinoza-Zepeda and Bucio-Perez are presumed innocent and are entitled to a fair trial in which it is the state’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
