5 Kane Park Projects Get $2M of $28.9M in Grants Throughout Illinois

The state of Illinois on Tuesday (Feb. 5, 2019) announced $28.9 million in grants for 89 local projects that will help communities acquire open space and develop and improve recreational facilities throughout Illinois.

And Kane County parks projects will get almost $2 million of that.

According to a state of Illinois news release, five projects in Kane County will receive about $400,000 apiece for upgrades in Aurora, Elburn, Geneva, Hampshire and the Oakhurst Forest Preserve in Aurora Township.

Here are the projects in Kane and the amounts of the grants:

City of Aurora, Increasing Public Use of Wilder Promenade — $365,000

The Wilder Promenade would entail closing North River Street between Vine Street and Park Avenue to create a plaza, according to an article in The Beacon-News.

Village of Elburn, Keslinger and Liberty Community Park Development — $400,000

Geneva Park District, Peck Farm North Development — $400,000

Hampshire Township Park District, Park at Tuscany Woods Development — $400,000

Forest Preserve District of Kane County, Oakhurst Forest Preserve Improvements — $400,000

$28.9 Million in Grants Throughout Illinois

“Investments in Illinois’ local parks makes it easier for families and recreation enthusiasts to enjoy our state’s beauty and help their communities thrive,” Governor Pritzker said. “Parks projects will also create jobs, providing a boost to local economic development efforts in dozens of communities and spurring additional investment throughout the state.”

The grants announced today are through the state’s Open Space Land Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) program, administered by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources).

The program will provide more than $28 million to support 87 projects, while two projects will be funded through in the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund. The grant programs can provide up to one-half of a project’s funds, and when combined with the investment of local matching funds will support more than $56 million in local park development projects and land acquisitions statewide.

The OSLAD program began in 1987 and has invested $419.4 million in 1,765 local park projects. The program receives dedicated funding from a percentage of the state’s Real Estate Transfer Tax.
