Judson University’s Architecture Department will welcome Carolyn Armenta Davis to campus at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, in Herrick Chapel as part of the Architecture Lecture Series. Davis will lecture on “Black Architects and Today’s Diaspora” to highlight the innovate and award-winning designs in architecture and the impact of the Atlantic African diaspora on design in an age of globalization.

Davis, a graduate of Indiana University who has relocated to Chicago, has presented widely as an international architectural historian, lecturer, critic, writer, and curator on African diaspora architecture.

Her lecture will be titled, “Black Architects and Today’s Diaspora,” highlighting innovative and award-winning designs in architecture. Particularly, Davis will consider the impact of the Atlantic African diaspora on design in an age of globalization. This lecture series is the first element of Judson’s focus for Black History Month in February.

An honorary member of the American Institute of Architects, Davis is an international expert on the African diaspora’s intersection with architecture. She has spoken in more than 60 cities around the world, and her research on Black Diaspora women architects is archived at the Schlesinger Library of Radcliffe College, Harvard University.

She also won the AIA Chicago Small Projects Award in 2014.

In addition to her numerous speaking engagements and academic commitments, Davis is also an international business development consultant. She has serviced corporations, foreign governments, non-profit arts organizations, and multi-lateral agencies. She has traveled to more than 70 countries on five continents.

With many years of experience lecturing in the architectural community, Davis’ work on African diaspora and design has been featured in numerous textbooks and magazines, including ARCHITECT magazine and Prentice Hall’s Understanding Art by Lois Fichner-Rathus.
