An 8-year-old Aurora boy was killed Monday (March 25, 2019) night when he was hit by a car while crossing Route 31 with this sister and grandfather.

According to the Aurora Police Department, police and fire personnel were dispatched at 7:42 p.m. Monday to the area of Lake Street (IL Route 31) in response to a report of a fatal vehicle-versus-pedestrian crash involving a young child.

Preliminary investigation indicates that an 8-year-old boy, his sister, and his grandfather were crossing the street, at which time the boy and his grandfather were struck by a vehicle traveling south on Lake Street.

Witnesses reported the vehicle then fled the scene.

Shortly thereafter, a vehicle with front-end damage was found parked with heavy front-end damage on a nearby residential street, police said. Additional witnesses reported at least two occupants exited the vehicle, one fleeing the area on foot.

Aurora Fire Department medics transported the boy and grandfather to a nearby hospital, where the boy was later pronounced deceased.

The investigation continues as members of the Aurora Police Department Traffic Unit along with the APD Investigations Division continue to attempt to identify the driver and passenger(s).

Second, Related Hit-And-Run With Police Car

At 8:44 p.m., an Aurora police officer’s squad car was struck as he was seated inside and assisting with the listed fatal crash.

John Lundy, 48, of Aurora was driving his white 2009 Dodge van in the area of Lake Street and Plum Street when he struck an officer’s squad car as the officer was blocking traffic.

Lundy then fled the area but was apprehended a few blocks away police said. He was ultimately taken into custody and charged with the following offenses:

• Driving While License Revoked — Class 4 Felony
• Operating Uninsured Motor Vehicle — Misdemeanor
• Fail to Yield / Emergency Vehicle — Misdemeanor
• Leaving the Scene/Accident — Misdemeanor
• Aggravated DUI — Class 1 Felony
• Aggravated DUI — Class 4 Felony
• DUI — Misdemeanor

Lundy remains in custody and will be arraigned later this morning. His first court date will be April 18, 2019, at the Kane County Courthouse.

No injuries were reported during this portion of the incident.

Charges are not proof of guilt. The defendant listed herein is presumed innocent and is entitled to fair trials at which it is the burden of the State to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Third Incident in Same Area

The APD post that reported the hit-and-run as well as the crash to the police vehicle also included the news that there was an attempted robbery at a nearby Dollar General store about an hour before the hit-and-run crash.

Authorities said that a man is in custody related to the attempted strongarm robbery of the Dollar General, 380 W. Galena Boulevard, that took place around 6:17 p.m. Monday.

Police did not say, however, that the incidents were related.
