Elgin Police: ‘Another Illegal Firearm Off The Streets’
Elgin police took more steps this week to get illegal firearms out of the hands of gang members.
On March 17, 2019, at approximately 6:25 p.m., detectives from the Elgin Police Department Gang Crimes Unit and the Unit for Special Assignments conducted a traffic stop in the area of Jefferson Avenue and Prospect Street. According to an Elgin Police Department news release, officers identified an occupant of the vehicle as Mauricio Rivera, 20-years-old of the 500 block of Douglas Avenue, Elgin.

A search of the vehicle was conducted after probable cause had been established and officers located a loaded firearm in close proximity to Rivera, police said.
The facts of the case were reviewed by the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office, which authorized the following charges:
- Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by Street Gang Member — a Class 2 felony
- 2 counts Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a Felon — a Class 3 felony
- Possession of Firearm no FOID — a Class 3 felony
- 2 counts Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon — a Class 4 felony
Rivera appeared in Kane County Court on March 18, 2019, where bond was set at $100,000, with 10 percent to apply.
“Due to our officer’s proactive enforcement efforts in neighborhoods, another illegal firearm has been removed from Elgin’s streets,” Elgin Police Chief Ana Lalley said.
The public is reminded that an arrest is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
