How ‘Retail Apocalypse’ Store Closures Affect Kane County
More than 4,000 stores will be closing this year, and some are in Kane County.
Payless said this week that it plans to close all of its 2,500 stores in what could be the largest retail liquidation in history, according to Business Insider. Sears, Gymboree, and Charlotte Russe are closing hundreds of stores in 2019.
Macy’s, JCPenney, Kohl’s, and Nordstrom are closing more than a dozen stores collectively.
How will this affect Kane County, IL?

Here are some of the brand name businesses that are closing and their Kane County locations:
Payless Shoes
This is one of the biggest store closings of the year, and there are discounts available now.
According to the Payless website, Kane County stores include:

Gymboree
The children’s clothing store filed for bankruptcy a couple of years ago. All 800 of its flagship Gymboree stores are closing this year.

J.C. Penney
J.C. Penney will be closing 138 stores, one supply chain facility in Lakeland, FL, and relocating one supply chain facility in Buena Park, CA. About 5,000 positions nationwide will be impacted by the store closures, most of which will occur in June.
According to J.C. Penney’s list, there are seven stores closing in Illinois, none of which are in Kane County.
Gap, Inc.
Gap Inc. announced plans to create two independent publicly traded companies: Old Navy, a category-leader in family apparel, and a yet-to-be-named company (“NewCo”), which will consist of the iconic Gap brand, Athleta, Banana Republic, Intermix and Hill City.
Gap Inc. plans to close about 230 of its namesake brand’s stores over the next two years, as it works to restructure the struggling apparel business.
According to the Chicago Tribune, the Gap has closed or is closing three Chicago-area stores, including one in Kane County, at Fox Valley Mall in Aurora.
The other Chicago-area closings are at Town Square Wheaton and Hawthorn Mall in Vernon Hills.
Victoria Secret
Victoria’s Secret is closing 53 more stores, its parent company L Brands announced.
A list of the closing stores was not released. According to Google maps, there are Kane County Victoria’s Secret locations in Geneva Commons, Chicago Premium Outlet Mall, Fox Valley Mall, Springhill Mall and the Algonquin Commons.
Sears
Sears is still alive, but there are store closures.
Here’s a list of 90 Sears stores scheduled to close in 2019. None on this list are in Kane County.
