An Aurora man has been charged in Monday’s robbery of a West Side store where a Dollar General merchant was injured.

According to the Aurora Police Department, officers were dispatched at around 6:17 p.m. Monday (March 25, 2019) to the Dollar General store, 380 W. Galena Boulevard, when employees called to report that a man had just attempted to forcibly take cash from a register there.

Witnesses told police the man — later identified as Jason L. Jackson, 32, of Aurora — fought with employees then fled the business.

Jackson has been charged with robbery and aggravated battery (both felonies) related to that offense.

Jackson fled to Waterman, IL, where police said he was involved in a domestic disturbance with his girlfriend. It is alleged that during that disturbance, he took his girlfriend’s car without her permission and left Waterman.

Shortly after that, the Sugar Grove Police Department responded to a single-vehicle crash involving Jackson and that vehicle. Jackson was taken into custody at the scene of the accident and turned over to Aurora police investigators, who interviewed and subsequently obtained charges against Jackson for the earlier robbery.

A Dollar General employee was treated and released at a local hospital for injuries sustained during the robbery, and it is not confirmed at this time if anything was taken.

The original APD incident was reported in the same release that reported a hit-and-run crash that killed an 8-year-old boy on Lake Street (IL Route 31) and a crash into a police vehicle at the scene, primarily because the incidents took place within a two-hour period and the same general area. Police did not say whether they believe the incidents to be related.

Charges are not proof of guilt. The defendant listed herein is presumed innocent and is entitled to fair trials at which it is the burden of the State to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
