A very late season storm system produced very heavy wet snow across much of northern Illinois on Sunday, April 14 — with Kane County communities reporting as much as 8.3 inches.

Hardest hit was a narrow corridor from DeKalb County east-northeastward into the far northwest suburbs of Chicago. Lighter amounts of 2 to 5 inches were common elsewhere across northern Illinois.

St. Charles recorded 8.3 inches, according to National Weather Service reports. Elburn and Huntley each had 7.5 inches.

A total of 5.3 inches was reported at O’Hare airport for the day. This makes this the snowiest April 14 in Chicago’s history, and the second snowiest this late in the season. Only April 16 of 1961 had more snow this late in the season in Chicago, when a total of 5.4 inches occurred.

In Rockford a total of 2.9 inches was reported for the day. This was not a record daily snowfall for Rockford. However, this ranks as the fifth snowiest event this late in the season in Rockford’s history.

• The official snowfall for Chicago was 5.3 inches observed at Chicago O’Hare International Airport. This is the second highest snowfall ever recorded this late in the season in Chicago. Only April 16, 1961, had more snow with 5.4 inches.
• The official snowfall for Rockford was 2.9 inches observed at Chicago Rockford International Airport. This was the fifth highest snowfall ever recorded this late in the season in Rockford.
• Other snowfall amounts include 2.5 inches at the NWS Chicago in Romeoville and 4.3 inches observed 3 miles southwest of Chicago Midway International Airport.
