Happy Earth Day! What We Learned From This Year’s Series
Happy Earth Day, Kane County!
Here’s a quick look back at the 15 stories we posted on the “Countdown To Earth Day Series” created by Kane County Resource Management Coordinator Jessica Mino.
This year’s series was (we can say modestly) the most-viewed ever.
Topping the list was Valerie Blaine’s article on volcano mulching, which has gathered 13,490 page views — so far.
Other super-popular stories included Jennifer Jarland’s recycling reminder “What’s a Tub And Should I Recycling It?” and Easter Recycling Tips, Christina Uzzo’s “Solar Incentives” story and Anne Wilford’s warning about the dangerous discharge that’s getting into our storm sewers.
One of the simple takeaways from this Earth Day series is that you’re not alone in your efforts to “go green” or recycle right or to simply appreciate the natural world around you.
Here are some additional links and resources for more information:
- Sustain Kane shows you what is going on in Kane County, how to get involved, and where you can find the sustainability information you are searching for.
- Kane County Recycles is complete with information on how to deal with (and reduce) waste, what can be recycled and where. This is a major part in keeping are community beautiful!
- Forest Preserve District of Kane County not only protects our open spaces, but also provides a magnitude of volunteer and educational opportunities. To get more involved in environmental protection, this is great place to start.
- Further resources and activities are available through Local Environmental Organizations. The Fox Valley Sustainability Network or Local Watershed Groups work hard to expand volunteer and educational opportunities, demonstrating the expanse of dedicated individuals and organizations throughout Kane County.
- Explore the outdoors around us — in a Forest Preserve, on the Fabulous Fox Water Trail, or in your back yard.
“Whether I go for a walk at lunch, take a moment to listen to the birds as I leave for work in the morning, or observe the bees and butterflies in my back yard, being outdoors always seems to leave me feeling happy and content,” Jessica Mino said.
Keep an eye out for Jessica’s monthly series, Step By Step Sustainability, with personal advice and tips on how you can move toward a sustainable, future-friendly lifestyle.
