1,200 Middle School Students Compete May 10 in Aurora Sports Festival

More than 1,200 Aurora middle school students will convene this week for the 25th annual Aurora Sports Festival.

The annual cross-city competition will commence with the opening ceremony at 9 a.m. on Friday, May 10 at the Phillips Park Aquatic Center, 828 Montgomery Road.

Seventh and eighth grades students earned their spot to compete in a variety of athletics and activities by maintaining a grade of at least a ‘B’ in physical education and/or health classes throughout the school year.

“The Aurora Sports Festival has been a rite-of-passage for Aurora middle school students for 25 years,” said Aurora Youth Services Manager Simon Rodriguez. “I remember how excited I was a student to participate, and it is great to see that same energy with the current generation. To have more than 1,200 students from 15 schools together at one time is what ‘One Aurora’ is all about, and we look forward to a fun day of healthy competition and community pride.”

During the daylong event, students will compete in bags, basketball, bowling, checkers, chess, golf, mile-run, skating, soccer, softball, tennis, volleyball, and tug-of-war at Phillips Park and nearby sites.

After the competitions, an awards ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. at the Phillips Park Pavilion.
Participating schools include Annunciation, Aurora Christian, Bednarcik, Cowherd, Rodgers Magnet Academy, Herget, Holy Angels, Jefferson, Jewel, Murphy, Pope St. John Paul II Catholic Academy, St. Rita, Simmons, Waldo, and Washington.
