The city of Batavia is launching a “Slow Down” campaign to raise awareness of traffic safety.

Mayor Jeffery D. Schielke is asking residents to join the effort by posting a free yellow “slow down” sign at their homes.

“Let’s keep our community safe this summer,” Schielke said in a news release.

For those picking up signs to post, there are guidelines on how far back from the curb the signs should be placed to avoid placing them in the parkways:

• 13 feet away from the curb if you have a sidewalk.
• 19 (or more) feet away from curb without sidewalk.

Residents can pick up signs at the following offices:

• city of Batavia office (upstairs in reception), 100 N. Island Ave.
• Batavia Park District (central offices on Wilson Street)
• Batavia School District (Rosalie Jones Administration Center on Wilson)
• Batavia Public Library (at the main checkout desk.)

When the campaign ends on July 12, residents are requested to please take down the signs but encouraged to keep them for the following year when the campaign begins again.
