A 25-year-old Elgin man has been charged with the drug-induced homicide of a 25-year-old man found dead April 4 in his St. Charles Township home.

According to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office news release, Kane County sheriff’s deputies were called at around 1:25 a.m. Thursday, April 4, to a residence in the 6N100 block of Florence Lane in St Charles Township for a report of a subject who may have overdosed.

Upon arrival, deputes located 25-year-old Trevor Brubaker deceased inside his home.

During the investigation, Kane County Anti-Heroin Initiative detectives discovered that Brubaker had purchased heroin, which also contained the deadly drug fentanyl, earlier in the day from a subject identified as Jose Charles, 25, of the 600 block of Dixon Avenue in Elgin.

Upon completion of the investigation, the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office authorized one count of Drug Induced Homicide against Charles.

Kane County Sheriff Ron Hain said the Anti-Heroin Initiative seeks to curb narcotic trafficking by charging heroin traffickers in drug-related homicides. The intent is not to take action against those who discover overdose victims and attempt to render aid by calling 9-1-1.

“Through enforcement initiatives targeting those who choose to traffic drugs in our community, along with medically assisted treatment and addiction counseling in the Kane County jail, we are aggressively setting the pace for how public safety combats this deadly epidemic in our community,” Hain said.

Charles’ bond was set at $500,000, and his next court date is set for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, in Room 317 of the Kane County Judicial Center.

The charges against Charles are not proof of guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the state’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
