The National Weather Service Chicago has issued a Flood Warning for the Fox River at the Algonquin Lock & Dam tailwater affecting Kane and McHenry counties and the Fox River at Montgomery affecting Kane and Kendall counties.

The warning for the Fox River at Montgomery, which includes the area from Red Gate Road in St. Charles downstream to Millington, continues today (Tuesday, May 28, 2019) through Saturday afternoon.

As of 8:15 a.m. Tuesday, the stage was 13.1 feet — just over the flood stage of 13.0 feet. There’s minor lowland flooding near the river.

The Flood Warning for the Fox River at Algonquin Lock & Dam tailwater, which includes the riverside from Johnsburg downstream to Red Gate Road in St. Charles, is in effect through Sunday afternoon.

As of 8:30 a.m., the river was right at flood stage: 9.5 feet.

The river will continue to rise to near 9.9 feet by Wednesday evening, the NWS said.

At 10.0 feet, Winaki Trail and Onaway Trail are threatened south of Algonuin.

Flash Flood Watch

A Flash Flood Watch has been issued for portions of north central Illinois for tonight (Tuesday, May 28).

Officials said the watch could be expanded eastward to include portions of the Chicago metro area if forecast confidence continues to increase.

“Have multiple ways to receive warnings if any are issued for your area,” the NWS said. “Do not drive onto flooded roadways.”

Nearest Tornado Was Paw Paw

On Memorial Day, there were many tornadoes identified in Illinois and Indiana.

The nearest tornado to Kane County was in Plattville, which you can see on the map above. That one was spotted by radar and people at around 1:48 p.m. Monday, May 27.

Another was reported in Paw Paw to our west at around 4:33 p.m. Monday, May 27. That’s highlighted on the NWS map below.

More On The Way

After a break for most of the area today, rain chances increase again from this evening into Wednesday morning.

Some of the showers and thunderstorms overnight could produce locally heavy rain which could lead to flooding, especially in areas where the ground is already saturated from recent heavy rainfall.

A break in the pattern appears to arrive Thursday afternoon or evening. Friday presently looks dry, but there is another chance of showers on Saturday though likely not with the heavy rain amounts we have been seeing.
