The Saturday, May 11, 2019, recycling event is one of the biggies — when Kane County will be accepting electronics, books and paint for recycling, and documents for shredding.

The event will be held from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Kane County Branch Court parking lot, 540 S. Randall Road in St. Charles.

At this event, you can recycle:

Electronics

Electronics include computers, keyboards, laptops, printers, televisions (any size, type or age), stereos, cell phones, microwaves, Christmas lights and more. A complete list of accepted items, and more information can be found at this page of the Kane County Recycles website.

“We unload for you!” Recycling Coordinator Jennifer Jarland said.

Note that there’s a fee to recycle TVs and monitors. See below.

Books And Paper You’ve Shredded at Home

Books of any age and condition for reuse or recycling.

Also, you can bring shredded paper — documents you have already shredded at home — to the book recycling area for recycling.

Paint

Liquid latex paint will be recycled at this event.

Paint has a recycling fee per container, payable by the resident with cash or check; see below for costs.

Latex paint is non-toxic but difficult to dispose of normally because you have to dry it out before placing it in your landfill trash. However, liquid latex paint can be recycled into new products with no drying out necessary by bringing it to this event!

Kane County will also take oil paint, but please note that you can recycle it for free at the Naperville Hazardous Waste Facility. More details and costs for recycling oil paint at the event can be found at the Paint Recycling Page of the Kane County Recycles website

Confidential Document Shredding

Paper documents of a confidential nature may be shredded for free onsite.

The limit is about four boxes, because this free service is for residents only. No documents from businesses will be recycled. More guidelines can be found at Confidential Document Recycling page of the Kane County Recycles website.

Costs

• TVs and computer monitors have a recycling fee, which is paid directly to the non-profit recycler. The fee is $25 for screens under 21 inches, measured diagonally across the screen, or $35 for screens 21 inches or more wide, measured diagonally The fee is payable by the resident with cash or card.
• Paint has a recycling fee per container, payable by the resident with cash or check. The fee for liquid LATEX paint is $2 per quart can, $3.50 per gallon can, and $10 for a 5-gallon bucket.
• All else is free to drop off.

Not Accepted

Kane County Does not accept hazardous waste or large household appliances like washers and refrigerators.

Weekday Electronics Drop-offs

Kane County also has two Electronics Recycling Drop-off locations that are open Monday through Friday every week.
