The North Aurora Police Department said today (Tuesday, May 21, 2019) that officials believe the May 18 report of a runaway girl to be unfounded.

The department had been seeking the public’s assistance after a 9-year-old told police she had met a girl of about the same age who asked if there was a shelter nearby where she could stay for the night.

The girl said she encountered the possible runaway as she was walking at around 1 p.m. Saturday to a friend’s house in the Timber Oaks subdivision.

“As of today, the North Aurora Police Department has received no reports of runaway or missing children since the incident on May 18,” police said via Nixle.com. “Further, we’ve received no tips or further information about the incident and believe the incident to be unfounded.”

The runaway girl had been described as 9 to 11 years old, white, with brown shoulder-length hair, was wearing a light blue shirt, black stretch pants, and carrying a purple and black backpack and a white plastic garbage back which appeared to have clothes inside.

The 9-year-old told an adult, who phoned police.

Police responded at about 1:02 p.m. Saturday, checked the area but were unable to find the girl.

The North Aurora Police Department had not received any reports of missing children recently but asked anyone with information about this incident to call 630-897-8705.
