Register Now For May 19 Save-A-Joe 5K Fundraiser For Veterans
A 5K race set for May 19 in Batavia aims to raise money for two local veterans charities.
“Whether you are an old hand of 5Ks or are new to running, all levels are welcome,” race organizers said in a news release. “We also welcome parents and their strollers to join in the fun.”
The race begins at 8 a.m. Sunday, May 19, at the Batavia Riverwalk, in downtown Batavia, starting at Island Avenue and Houston Street with the course following the beautiful Fox River.
Online Registration
Online registration is available until 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, May 14.

In-Person Registration
After May 14, interested runners/walkers can register at Dick Pond Athletics, 303 North 2nd Street (IL Route 31) in St. Charles, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, May 17, or from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 18.

Save-A-Joe 5K Mission
Save-A-Joe 5K is a 5K walk/run to support the mission of Save-A-Joe Veteran Charities.
The local communities in the Fox Valley have a number of service organizations that help veterans with education, housing, therapy, and finances. The mission of Save-A-Joe, Inc. is to partner with our local small businesses, corporate sponsors, and our community members to raise money to assist these veteran service organizations.
One hundred percent of all proceeds will be donated to two organizations this year, one which fights veteran homelessness and the other that carries out “Operation Sweet Tooth” for deployed armed forces.
The Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans is a non-profit agency that provides housing, supportive services and community outreach to help homeless and at-risk veterans and their families achieve self-sufficiency.
Founded in 2007 by Vietnam War veteran Bob Adams and Gulf War veteran Dirk Enger, MSHV operates on a vision of no veteran left behind due to homelessness, joblessness, poverty and/or mental health issues.
Operation Sweet Tooth was started years ago and is often referred to as “Cookies for the Troops.” Supported by Piece-A-Cake Bakery, managed by Diane Ahrens, a veteran herself, this project has sent cookies around the world, mostly to Iraq and Afghanistan, and especially to the USOs.
