Beginning this week, Chicago Street, between Center and Liberty, will be closed to westbound traffic due to road work, the city of Elgin announced.

Eastbound traffic and one lane of parking will remain open.

This closure will last through November as underground utility work is performed.

This section of Chicago Street will reopen to both directions of traffic over the winter months. The closure and traffic configuration will return again in the spring of 2020 when the road reconstruction work begins.

The completion date of the entire project is Nov. 1, 2020.

The posted detour takes westbound traffic south on Liberty Street and then northwest on Villa Street.

The Chicago Street reconstruction project will include new pavement, curb and gutter and sidewalk removal and replacement, along with water main, storm sewer, and sanitary sewer improvements, the city said.

In addition to the westbound closure of Chicago Street, this project will create other temporary inconveniences such as dust, construction noise, periodic loss of water service, driveway closures, and traffic delays.

“Every effort will be made to communicate with properties through the duration of the project to alleviate unexpected disruptions,” city officials said.
