Batavia police have charged a 20-year-old Batavia man with multiple felonies related to two overnight residential burglaries that took place on Friday, June 7, and Monday, June 10, including one in which residents discovered the intruder in their bedroom.

According to a Batavia Police Department media release, Tobias F. Granberg of the 100 block North Mallory Avenue, Batavia, was arrested on Tuesday, June 11, and has been charged with the following:

• Residential Burglary (two counts), a Class 1 felony.
• Burglary (two counts), a Class 3 felony.
• Forgery, a Class 3 felony.
• Unlawful Use of Credit Card, a Class 4 felony.

Police said the first residential burglary took place between 4:30 a.m. and 4:50 a.m. Friday, June 7, in the 700 block of Houston Street.

According to reports, the residents observed the offender in their home, in the dark, standing at their bedroom door.

The offender was described as a white male, in his late teens to early 20s, approximately 6 feet tall, with black hair and wearing a white T-shirt.

Police said the homeowners, thinking the offender was actually their son and unable to see his face, had a brief conversation with the offender. Later, they confirmed it was not their son, police said.

A few moments after the encounter, the residents decided to check their home and found the door leading to the garage and basement were open and the lights were on.

The residents advised they heard the sound of their garage door being activated. They noted that their vehicle, parked in the driveway, had the dome lights activated and the interior was ransacked.

Police said the residents noticed large and small electronic items had been removed from the home. The residents advised they believe the doors to their vehicle were locked prior to the incident. They also noted their wallets had been gone through and were missing credit cards.

Police said a second residential burglary took place between 8:30 p.m. Sunday, June 9, and 6 a.m. Monday, June 10, in the 300 block of Whipple Avenue.

The residence was believed to be unsecured at the time of the burglary. Police said the offender might have entered the home through the attached garage while the overhead door had been left open. A cell phone and a small amount of cash were taken.

Batavia Deputy Chief Shawn Mazza said the burglaries serve as a reminder that residents should secure their interior and exterior garage doors, as well as all windows and doors to their homes.

“Oftentimes, these types of crimes are committed when the opportunity presents itself and access is easily made,” he said. “We ask residents to be sure to secure their homes and vehicles. Please be sure to lock all vehicles left parked in the driveway as well as remove any valuables, to include the garage door opener or keys to your home.”

Granberg is in custody at the Kane County Corrections Facility awaiting a bond call hearing. He is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
