Bail has been set at $800,000 for a Carpentersville man accused of attempted murder and related offenses for stabbing someone he knew in the chest.

Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon charged 35-year-old Juan J. Rivera with the offenses of:

• Attempted first-degree murder, a Class X felony.
• Armed violence, a Class X felony.
• Aggravated battery, a Class 3 felony, 2 counts.

Kane County prosecutors allege that Rivera works for the victim’s roofing business, and had called the victim the morning of June 11, 2019, asking to be paid.

The two met at about 9 a.m. June 11 outside of Rivera’s home in the 2100 block of Tepee Avenue, Carpentersville. The victim was seated in the driver’s seat of his vehicle.

Unprovoked, Rivera reached through the car window and stabbed the victim in his left chest near his heart, as well as his right hand, using a serrated knife with a blade longer than 3 inches. The victim required life-saving medical treatment and remains hospitalized, officials said.

Rivera appeared Wednesday (June 12, 2019) in Kane County bond court. Associate Judge Keith Johnson set Rivera’s bail at $800,000 with 10 percent ($80,000) to apply for bond. Johnson set Rivera’s next court appearance for 9 a.m. June 26, 2019, in Courtroom 311 at the Kane County Judicial Center.

If he posts bond, Rivera cannot have contact with the victim or witnesses in the case, cannot consume any intoxicating substances, and must surrender his guns and Firearm Owners Identification Card.

The Elgin, East Dundee, West Dundee, Barrington Hills, Sleepy Hollow and South Barrington police departments assisted Carpentersville police in the investigation.

The charges against Rivera are not proof of guilt. Rivera is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the state’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
