The city of Elgin is alerting drivers to a full road closure at the intersection of Walnut Avenue and Jewett Street scheduled to start Wednesday, June 26.

The closure is epected to last seven to 10 days while workers complete underground installations and connections.

Officials say drivers should simply follow posted detour or take an alternate route.

Westbound Chicago Street Closure

Officials are also reminding residents and area drivers that Chicago Street, between Center and Liberty, is closed to westbound traffic.

Eastbound traffic and one lane of parking remains open.

The closure will last through late November as underground utility work is performed on the Chicago Street Reconstruction Project.

The section of Chicago Street will reopen to both directions of traffic over the winter months, but the traffic configuration will return again next spring when the road reconstruction work takes place.

The entire project is expected to be complete in November 2020. The posted detour takes westbound traffic south on Liberty Street and then northwest on Villa Street.

Chicago Street Reconstruction Update

Last week, crews completed the last water main adjustment on Fulton Street at Geneva Street and also completed two water service line replacements at that same location.

Crews then completed storm sewer installation on Fulton and continued north to DuPage Street.

This week, crews will continue storm sewer installation on Geneva Street and will likely be installing storm sewer on Chicago Street by the midweek.
