Garage Fire in Elgin Causes $10,000 Damage

Fire officials are reminding residents of the dangers of summertime garage fires in the wake of a Tuesday fire that caused $10,000 damage to a garage on Elgin’s East Side.

According to an Elgin Fire Department news release, firefighters responded at 5:29 p.m. Tuesday (June 25, 2019) to 840 Duncan Ave. for the report of a fire in a large detached garage.

The homeowner noticed smoke coming from the garage roof area and immediately called 911.

The first Elgin Fire Department units arrived on the scene within five minutes of dispatch and immediately determined that it was confined to the garage and the nearby home was not involved.

Smoke was seen coming from the first and second floor of the garage. The garage was locked and unoccupied.

The fire was brought under control by fire crews within 14 minutes of arrival. No injuries were reported to either civilians or fire department personnel.

The estimated fire loss to the garage was approximately $10,000. The cause is under investigation.
