State Re-Opens Fox River For Recreational Boating, But Officials Still Urge Caution

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources has lifted the restrictions on boating and recreational activities on the Fox River in Kane County as of June 11 after water levels receded below flood stage, according to a city of Geneva news release.

Due to the high levels from the recent spring rain, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources had implemented a restricted boating area on the Fox River in Kane County since 5 p.m. May 29.

The state’s closure pertained to boating and other water-related recreational activities on the Fox River.

According to the National Weather Service, periodic storms and thunder showers are expected throughout the weekend, from Friday, June 14, through Sunday, June 16.

Water levels on the Fox River remain high, and windy weather Friday combine to make for some danger to watercraft. Officials ask resident to be careful, even though the restrictions were lifted.

Lake Michigan Danger

On Lake Michigan, conditions continue to be hazardous.

“It will be dangerous to be in a marine small craft this afternoon (Friday) and early evening offshore of Illinois and Indiana,” the NWS said.
