St. Charles police say a stolen Kia driven by an Aurora man armed with a handgun sideswiped a van then collided head-on with a northbound car Monday on Kirk Road.

Miraculously, two drivers walked away from the crash, while the driver of the 2005 Kia Sportage — Jarvas S. Gordon, 31, of Aurora — survived with non-life threatening injuries.

According to a St. Charles Police Department news release, police and fire units were dispatched at 9:08 a.m. Monday (June 3, 2019) to the report of an accident with injuries in the 1600 block of North Kirk Road.

Callers also reported that one person involved in the crash was in possession of a handgun.

Upon arrival, police found two vehicles, a 2005 Kia Sportage driven by Gordon and 2011 Toyota Camry in the middle of the roadway, both with heavy front-end damage. Further investigation showed the Kia had been traveling south when it crossed the center line and struck the northbound Toyota head-on.

Police determined that the Kia side-swiped a northbound 2014 Ford van just prior to colliding head-on with the Toyota.

A witness told police that when the driver and only occupant of the Kia had exited the vehicle, he dropped a handgun on the ground. The handgun was recovered by police immediately upon arrival.

“No threats were made with the gun, and no shots were fired,” Deputy Chief Erik Mahan said in the news release.

The drivers of the Toyota and the Ford were attended to by St. Charles Fire Department paramedics on scene but were not transported. Gordon was transported by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva.

Subsequent investigation efforts resulted in police determining that the Kia Gordon was driving had been reported stolen out of Aurora earlier in the day.

Police said Gordon also showed signs of impairment and was believed to be driving under the influence of alcohol.

The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the following charges against Gordon:

• Unlawful Use or Possession of a Weapon by Convicted Felon, a Class 3 felony.
• Possessing a Firearm Without a FOID Card, a Class 3 felony.
• Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle, a Class 2 felony.
• Aggravated DUI – License Suspended or Revoked, a Class 4 felony.

In addition, Gordon was charged with the following traffic offenses:

• Improper Lane Usage
• Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident
• Illegal Transportation of Alcohol

Gordon has been in police custody while being treated for his injuries. Upon his release from the hospital on Wednesday, he was transported to the Kane County Jail.

The charges against Gordon are not proof of guilt. Gordon is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
