Woman Illegally Gains Access, Attempts To Stop Plane at Lake In The Hills Airport
Lake in the Hills Airport officials are alerting area residents of two recent security incidents, both involving a woman charged with entering a restricted area of the airport.
According to a village of Lake in the Hills Police Department news release, a 55-year-old white female tried to gain access to the airport Saturday, May 11, but did not know the vehicle gate code. Another vehicle behind her provided the code, allowing her access to the airfield, police said.
Once inside, the woman reportedly attempted to stop an aircraft while it was operating.
Police said the pilot was “able to avoid her” and contacted Lake in the Hills Police. She was issued a no trespass warning at that time.
On Sunday, June 2, police said the same female returned to the airport and was observed loitering inside in her vehicle on airport property. A pilot contacted Lake in the Hills police.
The woman was subsequently arrested for violating a trespass warning and charged with entering a restricted area at an airport. This is a Class 4 felony and carries a possible jail sentence of up to three years.
To help prevent further incidents, airport staff will be changing the gate code effective June 21, 2019. Tenants should look for the new code with the invoices issued in mid-month.
Details of the incidents have been shared with the Transportation Security Administration.
In addition, tenants are asked to use caution when distributing the vehicle gate code.
“If you do not recognize the person entering the gate ahead of you, consider asking them to contact an airport staff member who may be able to better identify the individual rather than provide the code,” police said. “Your cooperation is appreciated.”
Anyone who encounters suspicious activity around the airport should contact Lake in the Hills police at 847-658-5676 or by dialing 9-1-1.
